The Diary of Samuel Dodman 1791
I am unable to read his diary entries for late February as Sam has spilt wine over it!
The first legible entry in March confirms this. Apparently, he had an unexpected visit from a friend of George (Washington) from the 'old colony' and he brought a case of claret with him; a present from George.
He stayed for a week and it looks like they managed to sample the whole case.
(No 'sell by' dates in those days - so it seems that they felt that they needed to drink it quickly!)
