The real Father Valentine Story ------ ----------------------------------------------------
(you will need to be a native from Norfolk to understand this)
Ever wondered how or why those presents mysteriously appear on your doorstep on February 14th?
I know the answer!
Father Valentine was a Roman Catholic priest who won 34 million on the Lottery.
The Pope told him that he can only get into Heaven after he has given it all away (less 10% for the church).
When Father Valentine died and he arrived at the pearly gates, St Peter told him that he still can't get into heaven; he has to give it ALL away.
He asked the Pope for the 10% back, so he could give that away too and complete his task.
The Pope agreed, less a 10% handling fee.
Now, he wanders across Norfolk on the anniversary of his death; leaving presents on doorsteps. Only after he has left enough to make up the difference will St Peter release him from purgatory and allow him to enter Heaven.

So, poor Father Valentine is forced to trudge the muddy lanes of Norfolk forever. The interest charges ensure that he will never reach heaven, despite his selfless and blameless life!

Hence the OLD Norfolk saying -
It's easier for a rich man to pass through the eye of a needle, than for Father Valentine to get into Heaven!
