Barton Mills Roundabout - Archaeological Excavation 1982 - 1986. I see that various Government appointed contractors have started to demolish this roundabout and it has tempted me to dust off and re-read Sir Digby Crass's official account of the dig (published by The British Museum in 1991).

The four year excavation established that the original roundabout had been built across a Roman Road by the Iceni Tribe in about AD40. At the time all Roman roads were straight because Roman soldiers could only march in straight lines. By building a roundabout with no exits (apart from the one from Londinium) the Iceni successfully thwarted all Roman attempts to subjugate them for 20 years. In my opinion in should be preserved intact.
The Iceni have given two great monuments to the world. Queen Boudicca's Statue in London and Barton Mills Roundabout.
